Epilepsy Action, the UK’s largest member-led epilepsy organisation, is hosting its second epilepsy conference in Swansea on Saturday November 14.

It will take place at the Dragon Hotel, 39 Kingsway, Swansea, SA1 5LS from 9.30am until 4.30pm.

The conference, entitled ‘Epilepsy and Lifestyle’, will include interactive talks from an array of specialists from the world of epilepsy. Professor Phil Smith, consultant neurologist at University Hospital of Wales, in Cardiff, will be speaking about how epilepsy is portrayed through the medium of art, while Dr Khalid Hamandi, consultant neurologist at Llandough Hospital in Cardiff, will deliver his presentation on the research that he has been doing in the field of epilepsy.  There will also be a talk on epilepsy and learning disability from Professor Mike Kerr, consultant neuropsychiatrist at Cardiff University.

During the conference delegates will also have the opportunity to learn more about many topics relating to epilepsy including the role of bed epilepsy sensors and fall detectors in monitoring seizures at home. Dr Malcolm Fisk, Managing Director of Insight Social Research Ltd will talk about his work, while Dr. Ajay Thapar, a GP with a special interest in epilepsy, will be doing a presentation on how you can get the most out of your GP. Phil Lee, Chief Executive of Epilepsy Action, will also be present to talk about Epilepsy Action’s commitment to Wales.

Ann Sivapatham, regional services manager for Wales, said: “We welcome this event to mark Epilepsy Action’s commitment to Wales. This is a very important time to raise awareness about epilepsy and the effects it can have on the individual and their families.

“There will be an opportunity to ask questions of the speakers and it should appeal to all those who have an interest in the condition, whether you have epilepsy yourself, care for someone who has epilepsy or work with people who have the condition. It will also enable you to learn more about how you can improve the management of the condition and get the best care you can from your health professional. There will be something for everyone with an interest in the condition.”

Epilepsy Action, the UK’s largest member-led epilepsy organisation, also has an extensive network of branches throughout the UK. The branches hold regular meetings and offer a variety of social events and informative talks and discussions relating to epilepsy. The meetings offer the opportunity for people to share their experiences of living with epilepsy and also raise awareness of the condition in the local community. Epilepsy Action’s branch officers will be available on the day to talk to you about the support that we provide in your local community.
