Trefechan Communities First

Communities First is the Welsh Assembly Government's flagship programme which aims to improve opportunities and the quality of life for people living and working in the most disadvantaged communities in Wales. It is a long term programme that was set up to run for at least 10 years and allows local people themselves to decide what is needed, and help them to make it happen.
Communities First aims to get local people involved in improving their areas, to bring in funding and other support from a range of services, to encourage news ways of dealing with problems and involve everyone in working together to make their communities better places in which to live and work.
In each Communities First area a partnership is formed and takes on the main responsibility for running of the programme within their area. The partnership includes representatives from the community, statutory sector and voluntary and business sectors.
In Trefechan the Communities First partnership together with the grant recipient body (VAMT) employs a Co-ordinator, Development officer and a Development support officer to act on the partnership's behalf and together they consult with the community about the issues, problems and opportunities that exist within Trefechan.
As a result of this consultation process, a Community Action Plan was developed to address issues and problems identified by the community and exploit opportunities within Trefechan under the following themes
- Jobs and Business,
- Education and Training,
- Health and Wellbeing,
- Environment,
- Economic Inactivity,
- Crime and Community Safety,
- Child Poverty
- Active Communities.
This plan is used to apply for funding, join up local services and set the work programme for the forthcoming year.
