HONG KONG ALLEY

Hong Kong Alley Opening

Funding to a total of £6391 was awarded to Town & Park Communities First via the Heads of the Valleys Sustainable Regeneration Fund. A challenge Hong Kong Alley Picturewas given to the local aspiring artists of Merthyr to come up with designs that depict positive elements under the theme “Our Merthyr”. Workshops took place at Glamorgan Gates  Project and The Information Shop and pupils of Cyfarthfa High School submitted numerous designs; a truly wonderful array of work was produced by all involved .The chosen designs were then transferred onto large boards and are now permanently displayed at Hong Kong Alley. The project would not have been the success it was without the hard work and  dedication of “Mobile Arts Project” and local volunteers, as well as the support of our partners Glamorgan Gates, The Information Shop, MTCBC and The Hong Kong Alley Opening Day Probation Service.  The boards where unveiled by Cllr Jeff Edwards Leader of  Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUB GROUP

Town and Park Communities First are looking to develop an Environmental Sub Group.Once setup the group will work locally on environmental projects such as the creation of community gardens, landscaping of overgrown areas and general projects that will make the environment look more attractive, friendly and inviting.
Being involved in the group will give individuals the opportunity to socialise with other members of the community who have similar interests. Town and Park Communities First will support the group to enable them to apply for funding for potential projects.

PRAMS IN THE PARK

A project is currently underway called “Prams in the Park” it is an organised walk for parents and carers of children to socialise with others who may have similar interests or issues and to enable them to feel less isolated whilst also promoting a healthier lifestyle.

The project was initiated by Communities First and is being supported by the Lets Walk Cymru Walk Coordinator Kay Maybank and Surestart. To ensure the safety of all participating a risk assessment was carried out on the path which was to be walked. Our first walk was on Friday 15th May 2009 at Cyfarthfa Park. Due to poor weather conditions, attendance levels were lower than expected but everyone that attended said they thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely be attending the next one. A date for the next walk is currently being planned and as soon as it is decided publicity will go out .
