Town and Park Communities First
The Welsh Assembly Government’s flagship programme Communities First has the long term aim to improve the living conditions and prospects for people in the most disadvantaged communities across Wales.Itallows local people themselves to decide what is needed, and they are then supported in these decisions to make these changes happen within their local community.
Following a reclassification of the Wales Index of Multiple Deprivation in 2005 more areas within Wales have been added to the Programme, the latest being Town & Park, Merthyr Tydfil.
The Town & Park Communities First project has been in place since June 2007 and are based at 88 High Street, Merthyr Tydfil.
M-Games 2010
Sk8topia Skate Board Park at Merthyr Leisure Village saw 31 young people take part in the M-Games 2010 a skateboard and roller blade competition on Saturday 28th August. Young people who are members of the Merthyr Tydfil Youth Forum came forward with an idea to hold an exhibition on the Skate Park and take part in Bowls Tuition at Rhydycar Bowls Club as a means to build relationships between the skate park users and the bowls club members as there have been tensions around claims of anti social behaviour. From this idea the M-Games was formed with young people assisting Town and Park Communities First, Safer Merthyr Tydfil and MTCBC Street Based Youth Team in organising the day.
Participant ages ranged from 9yrs to 21 years and prizes were kindly sponsored by Route One and Proline Skates both are retailers in Cardiff. Winners on the day were:
Skateboarding
12 and Under Jamie Richards
13-14 Years Luke Rosser
15-16 Years Joe Thomas
17+ Years Rhys ‘Nipper’ Thomas
Rollerblading
Mixed ages Nathan Robertshaw
Mid event performances were provided by Popstars Dance Studios who hold classes for children aged 3+ at Georgetown Boys and Girls Club every Wednesday and Extreme Culture who gave a spectacular demonstration on their BMX’s.
This event would not have been possible without the dedication of young people and funding from Splash, SMT and South Wales Police.
Thank You to our local PCSO’s
Town and Park Communities First would like to say a big thank you to the PCSO’s of both wards. Dean Roberts and Alwyn Cook are the Town Ward PCSO’s and Chris Jones covers the Park Ward. The PSCO’s have played an important role in a great number of community projects over the past twelve months in addition to their role in assisting the Neighbourhood Policing Team.
The Communities First team in Town & Park have been able to call upon the support of the PCSO’s for many large community events to assist with the Health & Safety of the public, they attended the Communities First Summer Fun Day in Thomastown Park, the Mayor Charity Walk and spent over 2 hours helping youngsters in Town collect litter and rubbish and more recently supported the M-Games and the River Taff Clean Up. The PSCO’s have also played an instrumental role in responding to the concerns and enquiries of local residents attending PACT meetings every month, Neighbourhood Watch meetings throughout both wards, Migrants Forum and updating the Community Members in the monthly Town & Park Partnership Board meetings. The PCSO’s have built up an important and valued relationship with the residents of both wards and continue to play a crucial role in reducing crime and increasing community safety throughout Town & Park.
