Internships opportunity for third sector / Cyfleoedd lleoliadau gwaith ar gyfer y trydydd sector

Is there a short-term piece of work or project your organisation would like to carry out? Are you missing the capability and resources to be able to do so?

If so, you may be interested in finding out about a pilot programme being run by WCVA that is providing student interns across the third sector.

The Student Internship Programme aims to provide third sector organisations with specialist skills and knowledge through the placement of graduates to undertake a discrete piece of work or project.

The programme can place graduates for between four weeks and three months on a full or part time basis, with travelling expenses the only cost to organisations.

Julie Skelton, who is co-ordinating the project, told Network Wales that it is a great opportunity for organisations in the third sector, and one that WCVA has already taken advantage of.

‘People may ask what the difference is between an Internship and volunteering. An internship is a single piece of work similar to a project – it has a clear start and end date, it gives the Intern something specific to add to their CV, and is something of real value to the organisation.

‘Examples would include research projects, event organisation, feasibility studies, piloting new ideas, enhancing governance procedures such as risk and volunteer management.   

‘The organisations I have spoken to see the Internships as opportunities to try out something new, something from their wish list, whilst showing that the third sector can be a challenging and rewarding career choice.’ 

WCVA has already benefited from an Internship that aims to embed good practice within the health, social care and wellbeing sector.

Michael Richards, 24, from Powys has been working at WCVA since April. Through his internship, he is developing a good practice portfolio that will allow health and social care partners across all sectors to share intelligence and inspire new ideas while providing a platform for the third sector to demonstrate how it enhances provision through added value and citizen-centred services.

Michael, who has a degree in history and politics, and a masters in political theory, told Network Wales: ‘I have a real interest in politics, which is the principal reason why I wanted to come to WCVA. 

‘Seeing the way in which the voluntary sector interacts with the public sector really provides insight into the structure of politics in Wales. 

‘What has been great in this internship is the freedom I’ve been given to develop a project that I am responsible for. 

‘I feel this is a worthwhile and high-quality piece of work that has the potential to have an impact upon the voluntary sector and I am proud to be involved in it.

‘It has made me re-address my thoughts about civil society, and I am using my experience here to write my PhD application papers. 

‘I also wanted to intern to add some depth to my CV. I’ve got academic credentials, but through this internship I’ve been able to develop work-based skills that employers look for. My job applications are more accomplished now, which I am sure assists in the short-term job market. 

The internship programme is an easy and simple way to make good use of specialist skills and knowledge while providing an opportunity where everyone has something to gain.

Nod y Rhaglen Lleoliadau Gwaith i Fyfyrwyr yw darparu sgiliau a gwybodaeth arbenigol i fudiadau’r trydydd sector drwy leoli graddedigion i gyflawni darn o waith neu brosiect penodol.

Gall y rhaglen leoli graddedigion am gyfnod sy'n amrywio o bedair wythnos i dri mis ar sail rhan-amser neu amser llawn. Yr unig gostau i’r mudiad fydd costau teithio.

Dywedodd Julie Skelton, cydlynydd y prosiect, wrth Rhwydwaith Cymru ei fod yn gyfle gwych i fudiadau yn y trydydd sector, ac mae’n gyfle y mae WCVA eisoes wedi manteisio arno.

‘Efallai bydd pobl yn gofyn beth yw’r gwahaniaeth rhwng lleoliad gwaith a gwirfoddoli. Mae lleoliad gwaith yn ddarn unigol o waith sy’n debyg i brosiect – mae ganddo ddyddiad dechrau a gorffen clir, mae’n brofiad da y gall y myfyriwr ei ychwanegu at ei CV, ac mae’n wirioneddol werthfawr i’r mudiad. 

‘Gallai enghreifftiau gynnwys prosiectau ymchwil, trefnu digwyddiad, astudiaethau dichonoldeb, treialu syniadau newydd, gwella gweithdrefnau llywodraethu megis risg a rheoli gwirfoddolwyr.   

‘Mae’r mudiadau rwyf i wedi siarad â nhw yn gweld y lleoliadau gwaith fel cyfle i roi cynnig ar rywbeth newydd, rhywbeth o’u rhestr ddymuniadau, gan ddangos ar yr un pryd y gall y trydydd sector fod yn ddewis gyrfa llawn her a boddhad.’

Mae WCVA eisoes wedi cael budd o leoliad gwaith sydd â’r nod o wreiddio arferion da yn y sector iechyd, gofal cymdeithasol a lles.

Mae Michael Richards, 24, o Bowys wedi bod yn gweithio yn WCVA ers mis Ebrill. Drwy ei leoliad gwaith, mae’n datblygu portffolio arfer da a fydd yn galluogi partneriaid ym maes iechyd a gofal cymdeithasol ar draws yr holl sectorau i rannu gwybodaeth ac i ysgogi syniadau newydd. Bydd hefyd yn rhoi llwyfan i'r trydydd sector ddangos sut mae'n gwella darpariaeth drwy gyfrwng gwasanaethau sy’n canolbwyntio ar y dinesydd a chynnig gwerth ychwanegol.

Dywedodd Michael, sydd â gradd mewn hanes a gwleidyddiaeth a gradd meistr mewn theori wleidyddol, wrth Rhwydwaith Cymru: ‘Mae gen i ddiddordeb brwd mewn gwleidyddiaeth, a dyna’r prif reswm pam yr oeddwn yn awyddus i ddod at WCVA.

‘Mae gweld y ffordd y mae’r sector gwirfoddol yn rhyngweithio â’r sector cyhoeddus yn rhoi darlun gwerthfawr o strwythur gwleidyddiaeth yng Nghymru.

‘Yr hyn sydd wedi bod yn wych yn y lleoliad gwaith hwn yw’r rhyddid rydw i wedi’i gael i ddatblygu prosiect yr wyf yn gyfrifol amdano.

‘Rwy’n credu bod hwn yn ddarn o waith o ansawdd uchel sy’n fuddiol iawn. Mae’n bosib y bydd yn cael effaith ar y sector gwirfoddol ac rydw i’n falch o fod yn rhan ohono.

‘Mae wedi gwneud i mi ailfeddwl am gymdeithas sifil, ac rwy’n defnyddio fy mhrofiad yma i ysgrifennu fy mhapurau cais ar gyfer PhD.

‘Roeddwn hefyd yn awyddus i gael lleoliad gwaith er mwyn ehangu fy CV. Mae gen i gymwysterau academaidd, ond mae’r lleoliad gwaith hwn wedi fy ngalluogi i feithrin sgiliau gwaith y mae cyflogwyr yn chwilio amdanynt.  Mae fy ngheisiadau am swydd yn fwy cyflawn erbyn hyn, ac rwy’n siwr y bydd hyn yn helpu yn y farchnad swyddi tymor byr. 

Mae’r rhaglen lleoliadau gwaith yn ffordd syml a hawdd o wneud defnydd da o  wybodaeth a sgiliau arbenigol – mae’n gyfle i bawb fod ar ei ennill.
